Gritstyle was launched on September 30, 2013 in the charming city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama (home of the Crimson Tide) on a humid, midsummer night (is there any other kind?). The editor, known simply as “B” (very GG we know), moved to Tuscaloosa to attend graduate school after obtaining her undergraduate degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She spent several years in cosmetics/retail management (from Laura Mercier to Sephora + more) and advertising sales before charting a course in the new frontier. Her combination of experiences, as well as a ridiculous infatuation with style and beauty, lead to the creation of Gritstyle.
Grits is a well-known southern acronym for Girls Raised In The South! See what we did there?
Alex, the resident Media Specialist (and the more colorful of the two), is an alumna of Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. She earned her keep as a freelance graphic artist and marketing consultant prior to joining Gritstyle. Her most important responsibilities include creating the editorial calendar, contributing to articles, managing social media, and acting as liaison to brands, sponsors, & partners. In January 2015, she became Articles Editor for the site. In her spare time she loves to check out the latest exhibit at the local gallery, browse boutiques for vintage designer finds and, if she’s lucky, take a tumble down the ski slopes. Alex is the adventurer of the two and there’s nothing she won’t try at least once. Except a few things.
The team, who affectionately refer to eachother as “A” & “B”, strive to filter the very best of fashion and beauty with honesty, sincerity, playfulness and humor. They initially focused their attention on the southeast but their unique taste seemed to translate everywhere. Without changing their content the site grew…as did their appeal.
Gritstyle now has an international audience while using the same (sometimes “small-town southern”, sometimes “big city”) voice.
Jame Jackson, Lifestyle & Culture Contributor: D.C.
Jame’ Jackson is a student at Howard University in Washington, D.C., double majoring in english and ancient meditteranen studies. Although Jame’ is a writer, “jack of all trades” is her infamous nickname held by her friends. She is a journalist, makeup artist, freelancer, image consultant, actress, singer, poet, and classical pianist of 13+ years.
In her spare time she likes to shop, watch Netflix, write for her personal website The Blonde Misfit, and volunteer with CCH — Community Coalition of Haiti. Jame’ will be joining the Gritstyle family as an Editorial Assistant/Intern, helping everyone with everything. She calls herself the “real life Andy” from The Devil Wears Prada, except a little curvier and a lot more knowledgeable of clothes and Starbucks.
Jen Morgan, Lifestyle & Culture Contributor: London
Jen Morgan is a multimedia journalist currently working towards completing her B.A. in Journalism at Messiah College. She uses her love of writing and her love of helping others to stay focused as she pursues her degree. In addition, she has a minor in gender studies that she hopes will be combined with her love of journalism to achieve her ultimate goal: to redesign the perception of women in our global media.
When she isn’t snapping Instagram pictures for her friends and family back home, obsessively pinning new recipes and outfit ideas on Pinterest, or daydreaming about eating Pinkberry, she’s usually writing. She thoroughly enjoys her work of writing articles for websites designed for entertaining and educating teens, college students and twenty somethings. She’s a devout Christian, and knows that it’s only by God’s grace that she is able to do what she loves for a living.
In her limited free time, she loves to spend time with her best girl friends, give manicures to her campus friends, read (and hoard) women’s magazines and watch chick flicks. When she occasionally watches television, she loves Gossip Girl and any quality tattoo show, although she’s extremely biased towards Ink Master. Jen was thrilled to join the Gritstyle team this year, and she looks forward to sharing aspects of her life and experiences with readers through the most powerful medium available: the written word. Feel free to interact with her all across social media on Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest.
Mary Stampolous, Beauty Contributor
Mary is a senior at Fairfield University in Connecticut, where she is studying communication and marketing. Born and raised in New Jersey, Mary is a train ride away from New York City, and has always known that is where she would live and work after she graduates (May 2016, making moves). Since writing and beauty are two of her favorite things, she is excited to bring the two together at Gritstyle.
When she is not attending classes or writing, Mary abuses her Netflix account, indulges in her caffeine addiction, eats an obscene amount of avocado toast, tries new beauty products (on the never ending quest for the perfect lipstick), and chats with friends over her favorite meal: brunch! If you are looking for Mary she is probably at the nearest Starbucks with a iced vanilla latte in one hand and her IPhone in the other most likely on Instagram. Follow her day-to-day adventures on Instagram: @marystamp & Twitter: @marystamp13.
